Volunteers have stepped up to continue the work Fawn Valentine started with the Carrot Club at the Alderson Community Market. Each week, children earn Carrot Dollars to spend on produce at the market when they participate in Carrot Club. Carrot Club involves tasting a raw fruit or vegetable and trying a fun physical activity. Carrot Club has been made possible with a grant from the Greenbrier County Health Alliance for the past 5 years as a way to encourage families to come to the market and as a means to introduce fresh produce to children as they learn to shop and make healthy food choices.
In addition to the Carrot Club, a “Senior Savings” program is available through GCHA mini-grant funds to provide low-income seniors with vouchers to purchase high-quality, locally grown proteins like eggs, beef, chicken, and pork.
